Felicia Jafferies and Amanda Graham Brazinski discuss the federal and state regulations recently enacted to govern privacy and cybersecurity in an article published by Reuters. Felicia and Amanda highlight changes made by federal agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), as well as new state laws that will go into effect in the next twelve to eighteen months.
The increasing patchwork of privacy and cybersecurity statutes and rules is expected to result in higher compliance costs to entities. The authors conclude that considering the new legal requirements, any companies that are hesitant to invest in privacy and cybersecurity measures should seriously consider doing so due to the mounting risks associated with forgoing such measures.
